Decodeable books
Decodable books are books that have text that follow a specific phonics rule. When a child first begins to read it is very important to select books that match the phonics principal the child has just learned. When a child reads a fully decodable book, he can use his knowledge of phonics and his word analysis skills to read unfamiliar words. Because the child can figure out every word in the book, he feels successful, which in turn helps him build fluency and develop good reading strategies.

Sight Words & High Frequency Words
Sight words are words that don’t follow the rules of spelling or the six syllable types. Sight words are irregular because their sound does not consistently match up to their letters. This makes them hard to spell. These words have to be memorized because they are difficult to decode or read. Children have to be taught to memorize them and know them by “sight” so they don’t have to decode them.
High-frequency words are words that are most commonly found in written language. Although some fit standard spelling patterns, some do not. When teaching sight words you can use the Dolch or the Fry High Frequency Word Lists. Both lists contain sight words as well as high frequency words. |
